Hi, I am from Sydney, Australia and recently my girlfriends father bought himself a boat with a Merc 1150 (115hp) 2 stroke engine on it, we arnt too sure but it is either 1977 or 1979 model.

There is a problem with the waterpump/impeller, when the engine is running it doesnt seem to be pissing out too much water from the 'spitout hose' on the back of the engine, it just sprays out warm water even on high revs and at idle.
When the boat was purchased we were told that the impeller was actually changed a year earlier.

We rang a local mechanic and they told us it could be one of 3 problems:
1. Waterpump/Impeller problem
2. Something cought in the waterways in the engine
3. Kink in the 'spitout hose' on the back

What can we check to fix the problem? has someone had a similar problem? any help would be useful.

Also does this model of engine have a thermostat in it? and does it have a temperature warning signal??? like an alarm?

Thanks in advance.

- Eddie

P.S the serial number of the boat is 8047349 if it helps.

It has a t-stat on top of the head. Water pump impellers are a wear item, and should be changed every two seasons as a matter of routine maintainence.
Sometimes when running in water with high silt content, or when the engine runs aground, the impeller injests sand. This can clog ports inside the engine, and the telltale.
Salt can also crystalize inside the engine. This is why you should allways flush the engine with fresh water when you are done running in saltwater.
