Default 1979 140 Mariner CDI ignition coil replacement

I just received a replacement coil, Part #18-5186 which replaces Mercury part#339-7370. The package included a iron cylinder with hole in middle. I assume it is some sort of choke for Spikes or electrical transients, my question is, does it apply to my 6 cylinder or is it for another make of motor. I am assuming this coil is used in numerous model motors. If it does need to go on my new coil where does it go? Also, my hats off to all the folks that are providing this service. I have learned more from reading some of these posts than is imaginable. Thank you for your time and patience. sjk

^I called the Suppliers "tech no-support" line, they had no idea what it was for. No instructions in the box or package. I am concerned due to the new coil ohms out at around 600 ohms and the other 5 coils on my motor ohm out at around 900 ohms. With all wires disconnected. My gut feeling is this part may go around the "positive" wire between the coil and the switch box. A better description of the mystery part, it's an iron cylinder 1/2" OD X 1" long with a 1/4" hole lengthwise down the middle. Maybe it doesnt go on my motor, but with the difference in ohm values, I wonder. S# on motor is 5443137 . Thanks, for your help.

hey there, I just so happened to have replaced one of these on my 90 hp Mariner....The instructions said to use the core with the hole thru if the coil bolts to the mounting plate with the bolt running thru the coil. You can take the rubber boot off of the old coil, split the halves and see which core is in that one. In my application, the round core was not used..Hope this helpsJames

Good call, I broke apart my old coil and I see what you are talking about. It does not apply to my motor. Thanks for the help. Stu
