How does the serial number system work?

Earlier this week I posted a question about a Mercury 90 inline 6 I'm thinking of buying. I got a good answer saying that it was an '86. Since then I've drifted around on this BB just to get to know it. On another thread I found a link to a page containing info on Mercury serial numbers.

I'm not doubting, that "my" engine is an '86. I'm just wondering how the serial number system works. "My" engine's serial nr. is A150261 - on the above mentioned page is says that an '86 90 hp Merc starts with A902436. Can somebody help me out?

Hope you don't feel this is a stupid question.

Sincerely Kristian

P.s. The serial numbers page is found here: http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/techhelp/tech15.htm

Re: How does the serial number system work?

Thanks, I see your point. Kinda confusing with different numbering systems floating around. Any idea how to get hold of an official one?
