Default Mercury 150 ob. No power out of hole when pulling a skier.

I have a 1988 Mercury 150 hp XR2 v6 ob. and its been rebuilt about 3 years ago, and it idles fine, and runs good at top end, its got good compression about 115 lbs all around, have went thru the carbs and cleaned needle valves, the plugs always seen slightly damp and dark in color,I ran a test on the trigger and stator according to the book, and where is calls for 5400 to 6200 olms on the stator I get 1650 on one and 1970 on the other, and where is calls for 1100-1400 olms for the trigger I get .755 olms and for a test between the red wire and ground and red/white wire and ground, on the stator it calls for 125-175 olms I get .055 on both, the boat seems to run fine when just running around but as soon as I try to pull a heaver skier on salom I can go around the lake at 5 mph and soon as he lets go Im gone. I have a 14 1/4x17 prop. Could the stator and trigger cause this?

This sounds a lot like my problem. Did it end up being the stator and trigger?

Cool Re: Mercury 150 ob. No power out of hole when pulling a skier.

You should try a prop with 2" less pitch. Sometimes a high load on the motor will prevent it from even revving up. It may be that your prop is a bit over optimum, which makes it acceptable for all but the most heavy loads (like your skiier).

Alternatively, he can learn to do a jump start or dock start!

Porting the prop helps too without affecting other boat performance. The ports allow you to develop your hole hp faster because it allows gases to flow across the blades allowing the prop to ventilate and spin up at higher rpm's faster.

I had one and loved it.

That's a 2.0 litre engine. It needs to spin up to make horses. A vented prop would make a big difference. Prop pitch should be at the high RPM end for wot, or even a little lower.

For skiing, I use a High Five. On hammer down the engine spools up quickly, then the prop bites like it's got claws. Pops out of the hole like a shot. Even with a 150, I change props for anticipated load. Lower for skiing, or a heavy fishing partner.

hope it helps
John
