Hello, I just picked up a boat with a mid 90's Johnson 90, and I am having 2 problems. First, I noticed that it stays at 12 volts. Also It starts and runs great, but when I go to return to idle (from in gear or in neutral) it dies. Basically it does not like to run under 1000 rpm. When I bought the boat it ran fine (on ears in the guys driveway). Being an auto mechanic I know to check the basics, but I figured I would tackle the charging problem first. I was wondering if the symptoms could be related. From everything I have read I should check the rectifier and stator. I would appreciate any help on how to check it or any other advise that could steer me in the right direction. By the way, from above idle to 5,000 rpm it runs great. I think there may be some junk in the carbs, because it has been sitting for at least a year.

Re: Johnson 90 charging problem

Thanks for the reply. The owners manual lists motor as a 90 ML I will try to get the serial number tonight, as the boat is in the water and we have had some severe weather for the last 2 days. It is on a 1995 pontoon boat and I suspect the engine is about the same year.
