I am considering purchasing a boat with a 1999 Merc 135 saltwater series engine (2 stroke carb). The engine has about 50 hours on it. What problems should I expect to find with an engine that has not been run often enough?

Start with the water pump impeller and work north! Also check fuel condition. Smell the fuel in the carbs. These engines mix the oil with the fuel before the carbs, so there's 2 stroke mix in the carbs and it could be old/off. That would entail a stip and clean of the carbs. Other than that, I wouldn't expect too much wrong.

Chris..........

I don't think there will be problems associated with low usage. You may want to change the impeller as it may have become brittle. If the compression is consistant, and it runs, it's probably a good motor. Check if the owner has service records for the past few seasons and if not ask how he performs his own maintainence and what he checks...
