This is a 2000 15hp Johnson electric start. On Sunday, when the starter battery was too low, I tried to pull start the motor. On the 1st pull, the rope pulled all the way to the end and wouldn't recoil, stayed there. Finally got the electric start to work, and got out on the water OK. Didn't have time Sunday to take the motor cover off to look at the starter. (The motor is mounted in an awkward place on my sailboat.) A search of archives mostly discusses replacing a broken rope (my rope didn't break). I've got a factory manual covering an older, 1984 version of this motor that I used to have, but I don't have one for the 2000. That manual mostly also talks about replacing broken ropes and generally disassembly/reassembly of the starter. What is likely to have happened, and will my '84 manual be sufficient, or should I order and wait for a manual covering the 2000 before I get into this?
