Now that I have got my engine problems ironed out and things running sweet I have a lower unit issue I need to address.

I have struggled with this problem for some time now and thought I had it fixed but it has reoccurred. Back in the fall she was grinding bad when I shifted into reverse. I adjusted the shift linkage but that wasn't the problem. I also was getting some water in the gear case so I pulled it off and replaced the seals. The clutch dog and reverse gear didn't look too bad so I didn't replace them at that time. I just picked up a new clutch dog and gears on ebay for almost nothing (first time I ever got something on ebay with nobody bidding against me), lucky I guess. And I will use the new ones when I tear it down this time.

Anyway where my problem comes from is not the gears but the shift rod. While on the bench she shifted smoothly from forward to neutral but if I let it sit a day would not shift from neutral to reverse. I would have to spray wd 40 down into the detent mechanism and free it up. Even after I filled the lower unit with gear oil if it sat overnight I would have to work it a little to get it to shift to reverse smoothly. I put it back on the boat and it worked fine when I tried it out. I just spent a week in Southwest Florida fishing and from time to time had problems with it not shifting into reverse.

While I had the gear case apart I looked at the detent ball and spring and the mechanism showed no obvious signs of wear. Does anybody have any ideas or ever dealt with a similar problem?
