Paul's right. The crankshaft taper and the inner taper of the flywheel have to mate very cleanly. The key does not actually drive the flywheel...it merely locates it for timing purposes. A stronger key won't really help, and will probably ruin the flywheel or crankshaft.<br /><br />It's easy, when a key shears, for its metal to be smeared on both the shaft and the flywheel. This makes for an irregular mating surface. The tips in that link should help you get a nice clean mate and, with the proper torque, solve your shearing problem.
