Default merc/mariner tachometer wiring

I'm having problems with erratic readings on my tach.I've checked the connections and settings on the tach side.Does anyone know where the tach wires connect on the motor or what color?Motor is an 1998 cabureted Mariner 150.I saw a electronic box on the right side(from rear)near starter that had terminals with rubber caps on them.By those terminals were raised words reading white, brown etc. What was that?Any help is appreciated.

Tach is the gray wire... Make sure your battery is charging..Above 13 volts. Tachs that starts acting up are the first indication of a charging system problem (they are connected electrically). The box you are talking about is the CDI or Powerpac (electronic ignition).
