Info on old Kiekhaefer / Mercury inline 6 outboard
I need some info on an old outboard. It came with the boat (for $200) I got. It is an in-line 6. The only ID I can find is "KIEKHAEFER Corp.", and Kiekhaefer/ Mercury. Also on the front of the engine cover, it say "Merc 8 50", with the 8 larger than the rest. The serial number is 1625142. It has sat for a year. I would also like to know (or where I can find) what the fuel mixture is, as I'm trying to start it up. Thanks,Rusty

Dang...the one time I need a serial number cross reference and don't have one.Your Merc 850 could be one of three models. Either a 1962 (76 cubic inches) or a 1963-1964 (90 cubic inches). The serial number will tell which...but like I said...I don't have that info. In any event, I'm confident your engine would run just fine on a straight shot of 50:1 fuel/oil ratio. Just be sure it's fresh 87 octane fuel with a quality TC-W3 rated outboard oil backer.Sorry I couldn't be more definitive with the model year. I just gotta get my references updated....Walt

Geez...the one piece of info I DO have...and forgot to post it. Once again...sorry. It's the heat...or the wine...or the combination of...Your Merc's crankshaft HP rating is 85 hp.Walt

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll let yall know when she's runnin'. Oh, and you're right, Walter, it is phantom black. Running or not, I figured the motor, boat, and trailer were a good deal for 200 bucks!Rusty
