1973 6hp Evinrude 2 stroke in tough condition with a rookie mechanic.

I learned the hard way of removing old bolts without lube and the right torque and had to drill though all 4 stubs holding the lower end unit.

I drilled through the screws but I still can't get the lower unit to seperate, any suggestions?

Re: Lower Unit Stuck

What's left of the bolts are probably corroded to the housing. Turn the engine upside down and fill the holes up with PB Blaster or other good penetrating oil and let it soak. Some "gentle" proding with a rubber mallet will help.

Don't use a screwdriver or any other metal item as a wedge or lever between the LU and leg, you will do some serious damage.

I,ve never tried it, but I was told by a very experianced engineer that chlorine based bleech will dissolve the aluminium oxide corrosion.

Re: Lower Unit Stuck

If it's the driveshaft that's stuck, then the lower unit will drop about 1/16". If not then OBJ's right about the bolts still being frozen.
