I have a 87 60Hp Mariner. I just changed out the impeller and now that I have everything back together it won't shift into gear. Looking at the shift linkage everything appears OK there. Hopefully you can tell me what simple thing I have done wrong. Thanks Rob

Think carefully, did you have the shifter shaft out of the gear box? Did you have any of the spacers off of the shifter shaft? There is a reverse cam lock assmy that must be in proper synch if I remember right. These pieces just slide down over the shaft and are splined. Try shifting her with the cam lock removed....then you'll know if its related to the lock mechanism....do you have a manual with a parts break down?good luck!

Rob,I have a 74 Merc. 40hp and have done what sounds like you just did. I changed my impeller and put it back together. However mine just stays in forward gear. Do you have a plastic spacer with two wings and a plastic cam that sits on the spacer? Dmz.

C'mon guys....motor works...take off gearcase an reinstall...now motor doesnt shift... both you guys missed the shift shaft on the reinstall...gotta drop the case again...

ODDD1,Sorry, but had the unit together and running perfectly except that it stays in forward gear. And , the tilt lock worked perfectly when shifted.....so ...don't think I missed the shaft. (went together smooth) Also, there is an alignment spacer in the upper case that holds the shaft in place. Am sure it mated. Thanx. DMZ.
