Default Hole in Mariner block ???

Hi, I have an interesting thing to post. I have 1989 30hp Mariner OB, motor was running fine (previous owner heard a bang and discovered a hole in the block), I purchased it convinced to rebuild. Just for fun I tried to patch. The hole is approx. 1/4" is in the lower end of cyl # 2 near motor mounts, and has a crack 2 " long from it.I used some alluminum putty/epoxy and closed it so for the crack. Now motor runs fine, great compression, etc., and we use it continuosly on a 14' alluminum boat.Question is: what can cause a "trauma" like that, and keep motor running without problems ? No rod or bearing noises, starts at first crank....Yes, I do ALWAYS carry a trolling motor just in case, and I DO know I'll have to rebuild, but I want to use it ans see how long it can go...Thanks.Val

I don't think I have ever heard of somebody being more lucky. I assume that you purchased it for next no nothing since their was a hole in it. I have never seen one with such a hole run very well, usually caused by rod or foreign object in crankcase. Like fone_man said, run her till she blows, you can't lose. good luck

Thanks for the reply, that's exactly what I'm doing. It's been over 3 months that I use it for fishing and it hasn't missed a crank. I paid $ 75 for it and will cost $ 450 to rebuild it.Still bugs me the whole deal....
