I have a 1976 johnson 35hp model 35EL76. Ignition switch wires are disconnected. switch posts A,B,S and 2 m's. and a choke button with a brown wire coming off it. The wires are Red with blue stipe, white, blue, blue with white stipe, and purple with white stripe which i think goes to the other post on the choke button. can anyone help

Welcome mizzber11!<br /><br />Put the blue wire on one "M" and the blue/w white stripe on the other "M". This kills the engine when you turn the key to "OFF"<br /><br />White goes to "S"...Start.<br /><br />Red/w Blue stripe to "B"...battery.<br /><br />Purple/w white stripe to one side of the choke switch. The brown wire (should be purple) goes to the "A" on the ignition switch.

Thanks for posting, as a result I checked ignition wiring on my 40 Rude only to discover that the temp warning lite has had both wires run to the same terminal for the last 32 years :)

Re: johnson ignition switch wiring

I have a similar problem......my ignition switch went out and I can't find a replacement anywhere....our local advanced auto parts store had a universal ignition switch and the guy told me it would work. However when taking the one off the boat I can't tell what the letters are on the old switch. The new one has places for 1 battery, 1 ignition, 1 starter and 1 for accessories.....can anyone please tell me how I can make this work ? It is a johnson 50 horsepower as well......thank you very much

Take that stupid car switch back before you damage something--like the power pack. Then come back here and buy the right switch from iboats.
