Dear Sirs, I have a 1998 Johnson 225 Ocean Runner which stalls when shifting in and out of neutral. Usually does not happen when starting out in the morning, but latter in the day. Any advice on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Have had the engine serviced and carbs checked out, and everything on that end seems fine.

Is the idle to low?? Are you plugs fowling out from long periods of idle or trolling??

Chris, Thanks for the reply. Plugs are good, idle is generally good. Problem is specifically centered around the shift. Read some articles about the shift interrupter switch out of adjustment and w/neutral safety switch adjustment(at motor)... either of these could be at the root of the problem, but not sure.

Welcome!!

It'll be the shift interrupter out of adjustment if it dies going into neutral. The switch only operates when coming out of gear. The neutral saftey switch in the control box simply keeps the starter solenoid from engaging unless the motor is in neutral.

Dhadley, Thanks for the reply. From what I had read - sounded like it, but wasn't sure. I'll read up on it in the repair manual to see if it is an easy fix. If not it's back to the shop! Regards!

The adjustment is really straightforward and easy. Since you have a manual it shouldn't be hard at all.

Hello Dhadley,

By chance, do you know if in the clymer intertec shop manual, the shift interrupter is listed with a different name? Couldn't find a reference to it.
