Hello all. I have recently joined found this forum and hope to learn a lot and help as well.

I have a 2001 Evinrude 150 that has been overheating for sometime now. Late last year it started so i replaced the thermostats firsts. That seemed to help for about 2 weeks then it happend just about everytime I got on the throttle. I then took the boat out for the winter and had the water pump done at the same time. This is the first time I have had the boat in the water since the pump was replaced and it overheated again. It never overheats at idle this happens randomly mostly when open up the throttle. When this happens I shut off the engine wait for it to cool down start it back up and it is fine most of the time. Does anyone have any ideas what i should do next?

Thanks

Patrick

Is your intake clogged? If it is that might do it.

not that i can see. I can tell you that the motor is spitting water out the back of the motor and is going down about 2-3 inches in the water.

I am assuming the engine is extremly hot to the touch when it overheats and it not some type of electrical malfunction.

Otherwise I think its some type of blockage and you may need to check the coooling flow path. Possibly removing the lower shaft and running a hose through the inlets and outlets.
I am not an expert and new to this forum but recently removed my lower shaft on my 73 johnson 85 hp to repair the water pump. I placed a hose in the inlet and waited until it went through the outlet to ensure there was no obstruction.

I am really not sure how hot it is. I was in the ocean when it happend so i didn't want to remove the cover at the time. the tell tale is definatly spraying water so i didn't think intakes would be the cause. I am definatly considering all options at this point.

Re: 2001 Evinrude 150 overheating

I do not know how difficult this is while in the water but the next time it overheats pull off the motor cover and place your finger on the cylinder head. If the water pump is cooling the motor you should be able to hold your finger on the head for 20 seconds. If not it will be hard to hold your finger on there for a few seconds. This way you will know if your motor is truly overheating.

I just want to make sure its truly overheating and not somthing else since it does not overheat at idle.

I will give this a try the next time it happens. Thanks

Has anyone ever had a sensor go bad that could cuase this? I guess replacing that should be pretty easy and cheap

I believe i have found the issue. The 2001 Ficht motor has a lower thermostat. I went to replace this as a last resort and found that the line to the thermostat was clogged. I cleaned out the hose and replaced the thermostat. So far so good. Thanks everyone for your help.

its a good thing to hook up flushing attactment regularly, because of all the plumbing in that motor..

I flush it out with fresh water everytime i use it. I boat the boat used so this must have been build up from the previous owner.
