55 HP johnson shift problems

I have a 1978 manual shift 55hp.when i shift forward it goes in reverse and when i shift in reverse it goes forward. can anyone help me out with this problem.The motor does not have original lower unit. could somone have put the gears together backwards?<br />Please help fshnfool@metrocast.net

If the lower unit is not the one for that year motor you'll need the shift linkage from the powerhead the lower came off of. The lower is probably from a 1973 - 75.
