1975 70hp evinrude electrical short

outboard ran fine in saltwater 1st time. ever since has an electrical short that shocks you when you touch anything in boat when running. rectifier had problem, changed, some improvement but still shocks in saltwater. have not tried freshwater. engine misses at high rpm...<br /><br />thanks...

Welcome to iboats. If you can run this engine with the cover off in the dark you will probably see a wire arcing to the block or somewhere it shouldn't. Check and clean ALL of your grounds.

Also check all plug leads for chaffing or splits and plugs for any cracked insulators.Pay particular attention to the lower cylinder plug lead boot,as it may be contacting/arching with the engine cover latch.Otherwise,if all checks out ,you may have a ground in the stator windings.Look under the flywheel and just get a visual of the stator.Post whether it appears to have any black goo or signs of the epoxy breaking down.
