Missing data tag

I pulled a evinrude 35 out of my father in laws shed that hasn't run in 15 years. I got it running but it has a bad lower unit. The data tag is missing, is there another way to tell what model it is? On the intake it says 1979 timing specs so I assume it is a 79 but there are four different model numbers when I go to look for parts. Also what range of years would share the same lower unit? Look on the starboard side of the engine block for a round, silver plug with two sets of numbers on it. It's a welch plug, looks about the size of a quarter.
