Default 1984 115 Mercury - Blown Cylinder?

My 115 mercury had been making a slight ticking noise for several weeks but ran fine with full power, however, the last time out it completely quit and I smelled somehing burning. It would not even turnover when I tried to start it at the lake. After I got it home it would turnover, but very slowly with no evidence of starting. Does this suggest a blown cylinder and is there an easy way of determing this.

Time for a compression test..Then maybe pull the heads. My bet you had a lean condition from one of your carbs if you melted a piston..check the compression.

Rodney, was the motor pumping any water at all? May have been an overheat.

I'm going down this same road right now with a 1984 Merc 150. If the motor won't turn over you can't do a compression test. I have learned that there are many things that can cause a melt down and if you intend to fix it you need to make sure you find the cause. I lost two cylinders but my motor never locked up. I'm doing the rebuild myself and feel like i'll end up with between $1400 & $1600 in it. You may want to just check on a new powerhead. You might as well go ahead and pull the heads to inspect the cylinders. Gaskets are cheep. I can only fing pistons to .030 over for my 150 so you may or maynot be able to bore your block depending on the damage.

If you don't mind the cost just go new four stroke. Todasy gas is hard on 2 strokes.

Good Luck
