Default 4HP Mariner - Will Not Idle, (AGAIN)

I posted the question below earlier but all I got back was a suggestion to adjust the low speed jets. That is not a lot of help since I do not know where they are or how to adjust them.I'm new to this but am getting the impression this bulletin board is for all the professionals sharing their expertise with one another, which I am sure must be rewarding, but not of much use to an amateur like myself, who needs answers. If my question is beneath the experts here, perhaps someone could direct me to a forum geared more towards answering questions like mine. Thanks in advance.I purchased the motor five years ago. However, it only has ten or so hours on it. I cleaned it all up and put fresh fuel in it and it will start okay. But, it will not idle unless it is set at very high rpm. At lower rpm, it just dies.Any suggestions are much appreciated.

You are gonna need to get in there and clean the fuel system. Including the internal passages within the carb. You may need assitance from someone versed it doing it, or get yourself a manual and dig in. Stop back bye here for help if you need it. But you should have a manual anyway so you can associate the pictures with the terms.

Hello Neil, I am by no means an expert on boat motors. I will say this - I have posted a lot of questions here and have been helped a lot. Here are a few pointers that may help you when you post anything anywhere on the net. Be as precise as you can on your problem as well as your info. Remember all motors (like cars and trucks as well as manufacturers) are different and need to be thought of that way when trying to determine the cause of the problem. I think you will find no question will be considered beneath anyone. For example look at my post of "Now I am really going to show my ignorance here". Make sure you begin by saying I am completely new to this (whatever it is) and please explain in lay terms. That will let the person that is trying to help you know to be specific. And if for some reason they are not specific enough, do not be afraid to say "WAIT A MINUTE HERE" I do not know what you are talking about. I hope this helps.

P.S. I forgot to tell you that if you do not get an answer and your post starts to drop lower on the page - just click on it and reply to your own post (just keeping it on top) will keep your post at or near the top. That way people will see it and look at it.Lot's of luck

What's going on here? This is the second time in a week that someone is whining because he isn't getting the answers he wants.Well, Neil, here is a bit of advice we experts share with one another a lot. Go get a manual so when we give you advice you know what we are talking about.Red sky at night. . .JB

Amen, JB! It seems to be that if their problem isn't solved instantly, it's taken as an insult. All things worth having are worth working for, so some effort on the owner is required. At the bare minimum a manual, and hopefully a little patience as well.

Impatience? Guilty as charged. But, to be honest, I do not respond well to insults or folks who talk but say little. I'll work on it though. To those who were kind enough to actually read my posts, stay on subject and offer real advise, many thanks. I took my carb apart, cleaned everything up and was able to put it back together, (with no parts left over). I also changed my plug, re-adjusted the idle and fuel mixture screws and the motor is running great. Thanks to you guys, my wife, daugher and I will be able to leave on schedule for a week of camping and fishing. You'll never know how much it means to us. THANKS..No need for replies for I'm outta here.

Neil, Listen to YEPBLAZE---J.B.---and FOULED PLUG. "Get a MANUAL." 75% of the people with questions haven't bothered to get a manual. It's much easier to relate to a photo or a diagram. Then when someone suggests a procedure you will have an idea what they are talking about. When a person posts a question, they are not asked for a dime. This BB is for boaters helping boaters. A little feed back on the results and a little appreciation is all that is asked. This BB has enabled me to turn two "anchors" in my garage to two fine running vintage outboards. Understanding goes both ways. Someone will post a suggestion sooner or later, they have other lives except motor wizards. When someone posts a question and gets solution, if he is a WHINER it just makes me and Good Luck with your Boat. Hal. Back upstairs!
