65 horse johnson problem

a friend hooked up his battery cables with reversed polarity. Now it cranks but won't fire. Did he fry his powerpack??

65HP Johnsons were manufactured from around 1968 on up. Lots of years, models and differences. Which year was yours?<br /><br />Anyway, check the fuse and check under the flywheel.

If it has amplified ignition, yup. :( If it's CD ignition, then it should have no effect on spark :) except that he'll need a new voltage regulator for the battery to charge again.

And if you don't find anything visually, disconnect the yellow wires running from the stator to the rectifier.<br /><br />If it starts then, the rectifier is bad. <br /><br />If the rectifier seems bad, don't even think about reconnecting it because if it shorts out inside it can ruin your stator.
