Hi,
I hit a pastic bag and the engine cut out. it restarted but hardly any water coming out and now over heating alarm comes on. a machanic is working on it. changed the Impeller. he took out the thermostats. and with the hose hooked on he tried it and still hardly any water is coming out. Another machanic from the johnson dealer said the thermostats have to be there. the engine is a 2000 175hp Johnson. the engines are low hours and still like new. any ideas what can be done? could the water pump be bad? one guy wants to take the heads off to clean the water system?
When i run on the hose water trickles out and in the sea less water comes out.
they say water is coming out and at idle temp is ok, they want to do a sea trial but i am refusing till i get more water out of it.
any ideas?

I always make a point of making sure all the fragments to the impeller are accounted for. Sometimes pieces work into the cooling system and block water flow. They seem to lodge between the block and base, but could end-up anywhere. With the thermostats out and the gearcase off, you can sometimes get them out by backflushing thru the thermostat openings with a garden hose.

the housing was damaged as well, make sure the pump housing got replaced with the impeller and yes on that motor the t-stat assemblies are absolutly imperative for water pressure and engine idle.
if its a 60* motor the heads jump off that motor and the orings need periodic service anyway so pop them off check the surface flatness and continue on. if its a 90* motor you will need headgaskets. check the compression as well. that motor does NOT have an auto shutoff feature. the shutoff was due to the pistons expanding until they stuck to the cyl wall.
but do not run that motor until its properly inspected and the T-stats are in it. the t-stats on all modern OMC/BRP v motors are an intragal part of the water pressure control system. and as a lot of V6 motors run a water cooled regulator a loss of pressure can and does lead to regulator overheat then regulator fires. and yes the burn very well.

Re: plastic bag, now no water coming out engine

I have now got two new thermostats, will get them fitted in tomorow. the heads have been off and cleaned, new impeller, the old one was complete no damage to it. we have filled a barral up with water and ran the engine in there, water just isnt coming out like the other engine, but the alarms not going off at idle, if you slightly rev it, more water comes out but a little erratic. now i know about the thermostats, lets hope they sort the problem out then. i use the boat daily and its been such a great boat, i hope it will stay that way now.
all this cause of liter,hmmmmmm.
