89 johnson 88spl bogg to 4000 rpms on way in help

not sure why but boat runs great turning 6000rpm whole trip, not long runs between fishing holes. This is the second trip that on the way back in the boat revs up then revs down to 4000 rpm at wot. any suggestions why this happens or what the cause is. I dont think its a carb problem, just been rebuilt and I use sea foam regularly. <br />Help!! when its time to go I want to go!!!!

86,<br /><br />You are probably dropping a cylinder. Very likely a coil/plug. The spark plugs MAY help determine which cylinder. It could even be a plug breaking down. Use NOTHING BUT CHAMPIONS in that engine.<br /><br />Check all the connections at the coils, especially any grounds.

Next time the engine slows down, squeeze the fuel primer ball and see what happens.
