1977 85hp alarm

I have a 1977 85hp evenrude on a 1977 avenger 16ft boat. last time I took the boat out the alarm sounded, so I shut the engine off. when I started it back up it did not sound. there was water flowing out the back holes and I only had the boat out for 5 min. do you know what could have triggerd the alarm and what should I change as a precaution?

Maybe a stuck T/stat or failing waterpump.If it's been more than a couple of years since they were replaced,it may be time.Otherwise ,I've experienced plastic bags and once even a mullet that got wishboned around the lower unit water intake that starved the pump setting the overheat alarm.Not very common,but it can and does happen.

Even if the water pump was starved for just a minute, it's junk.<br /><br />Tune up the cooling system. New stats, water pump.
