ive been looking at some used boats lately and the sport jet looks pretty appealing from a hp vs cost, weight standpoint.also noticed that there sees to be omc, merc and yamaha versions. looking at some smaller boats up to 17' that could handle some shallow water situations, would like to here others experience/opinion of these engines.

The sport jet 90 will get about 35-40 MPH top speed. The sport jet 120 about 40-45 MPH. Both in a 12-13 ft boat.

The bigger sport jets are much more fun.

Ken

thanks for the input. do they require any more maintenance than an equivelent outboard? how about the pump itself?

Re: opinions on sport jet?

The motor part is the same as an outboard. It is a Force (Chyrsler) powerhead with Mercury ignition. They arent the greatest design, but are very simple.

The pump is pretty easy to maintain too.

I would say the whole thing is equivalent to an outboard motor, but the pump is very reliable. I have never heard of a pump failure. There are no gears, so there isnt much to fail. Only if you suck something up in there.

The larger Sport Jets like the 175 and the 240 are all Merc.
