newby here, didnt find answer to my question in any other post. I recently acquired this motor for
nearly nothing. Seems to run good & hydroelectric
shift setup seems to work in the driveway, havent
had it in the water yet. Lower unit fluid looks
good. Seems a tad low, does not runout of top hole. I gather from reading here that this thing
uses hydrualic pressure to transmit motion: correct??? If so, what fluid do I need use in the
lower unit? I would like to change it before 1st
use & sure dont want to put anything in it that will damage it. Thanks for any info.

Hey Robert! Welcome to iboats!

What you want is a gear lube made for electric shifts. You can find this at any John/Rude dealership in the form of Premium Blend or Premium "C". Walley-World and a few other places will carry similar products but make sure the container specifically states that it's made for electric shifts.

Thanks, I dont have original owners manual. I did
find a type c fluid on this website for electric
shifts. I am still curious, does the lower unit
use a hydrualic pump to transmit motion?

Your gearcase uses electrical solenoids to change hydraulic oil flow which in turn builds up pressure to move the clutch dog into the neutral or the reverse position. The gearcase is apring loaded into forward gear unless there is enough hydraulic pressure to move the clutch dog.

The gears transmit motion to the propshaft when the clutch dog engages either fwd. or rev. gears.

Thanks, I dont intend to do any exploratory repairs to find out how it works unless it quits.
