'71 Johnson 50 hp fuel line routing

I replaced fuel lines and rebuilt both carbs & the fuel pump on my motor. The motor now starts fine but revs wide open as soon as I hit the throttle. There is no way to lower the revs without killing the engine

After each such episode I find an apparently excessive amount of fuel in the bottom of the item that is mounted on the front of the carbs :(

In my blessed mechanical ignorance  I have determined that I either routed the fuel lines incorrectly, screwed up the fuel pump, or somehow did not properly adjust the float.

Any suggestions/comments are appreciated :D

My manual does not have a diagram or photo of the fuel line routing. Can someone with such a motor pretty please post or email a few digital pics of their engine with the cowling off?

Sounds to me as though there is fuel passing through the carb and running out into the air box (carborator muffler). Check the float settings again. One or more might be off.

Be very careful of the motor reving uncontrolled. A "runaway" motor has a lifespan measured in seconds.

You didn't say what motor it is, but you might find a manual for it at the library in the reference section if you don't want to buy one.

I'm sorry, I put the motor info in the title but not in the post. It's a 71 Johnson 50 hp. I have a manual but a specific guide for fuel line placement is not included.

Thanks for the help.

Are both carbs closed and the timing fully retarded?

Not really sure what that means. Looks like I'll have to check the floats and bring to a professional if that doesn't work.

That would be leaking needle/seat in float bowl most likely.

That really makes sense after what I saw the motor doing. Thanks

Re: '71 Johnson 50 hp fuel line routing

Two things control the speed on that motor; the carbs & the ignition timing. If you work the throttle back and forth a couple times, you should be able to see how the two factors change together. The first bit of speed increase is largely due to advancing the ignition timing.

The motor is probably overspeeding due to one of these - not due to fuel line routing.
