Hi Everyone:

I was given a 2.5hp Johnson that looks just like the one shown in the link below.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JOHN...16739582QQcategoryZ111122QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have a couple of questions about it

1. Can anyone estimate the year of this motor?

2. The instructions on the motor say 1/2 pint to 1 gallon of gas. I think this works out to 16:1. Is that correct?

3. Can 2-cycle oil be used in this motor?

4. Are these good motors?

5. Mine has been sitting for about 3 years. I've read the general comments about starting motors that have been sitting around awhile (spray oil in cylinders, clean plugs, replace lower unit oil) Anything I'm missing? It ran fine prior to being stored indoors.

Thanks for your help!

John

Re: Newbie with a couple of questions on small antique Johnson

Would look like in the very late 30's to early 50's John. Look on the port side (left side) of the block near the bottom. Should be a tag there with a model number which I believe will start as an HD or HS and them a couple numbers. Post that and we can give you the exact year of the engine.

Fuel mix for thes would be a 25:1 mix using any rated TC-W3 outboard oil. That's a quart to 6 gallons of gas. Most oil bottles will give you the ratio/gal of gas so you don't have to mix a whole bunch at one time.

Setting for 3 years will most likely mean that the carb will be fouled with varnish and a cleaning is due. Carb kits are scarce although you could try TwinCity outboard (they have a site) and see if they can help. Or try the Old OMC site. They can put you on to a kit maybe.

These are great running engines when tuned in correctly and will take a beating before they give out. Make sure you have spark to both cylinders and put a new set of plugs in it. You will also want to check the condition of the fuel tank. May have to clean it out also.

If you want an OEM manual, the can be gotten thru Ken Cook Co., ishopmarine or mastertech. They all have sites.

And by the way.....Welcome to iboats!

The one in your pic is a 1946-49 model. Just to give you a reference for now. As OBJ said, the model number will verify the year. Don't know if you read the FAQ section yet. Link below: Also, I don't know if that's an air cooled engine or not, but if it is, use regular old 2-cycle oil(Chainsaw) instead of TCW-3....

Awakening a sleeping outboard
