Recently I purchased a boat w/ a 150 Evinrude. Both had sat for 2-3 years without fogging b4 it was put away. Motor started, ran poorly and shows 60-65 # of compression in all 6 cylinders. Someone suggested stuck rings/carbon buildup and to pour Dexron II tranny fluid down the cylinders and let it soak. I did. Now it appears that it's saturated into the carbs. I have no carb manual and I need to clean them out. Any suggestions...other than getting a manual. Thanks!
I'm assuming you have a crossflow 150. Do another compression test with a different guage. The readings you got aren't that far off what is normal for those motors.
Did manage to get it running this afternoon and in a test barrel, it appears to run good. It's my understanding the compression for this engine should be around 100#. Is this correct? It is a 60 degree engine. What is the crossflow? Thanks,Gerry
You should run a can of Bombardier Engine Tuner through the engine. Then take a compression test. See if the compression comes up. Check compression with the plugs out. You did not say what the model year was on the engine.

Re: 150 Evinrude w/ ow compression
Just something to keep in mind -- when motors sit that long the carbs tend to gum up. If it's running OK on the hose (idle circuits), that doesn't mean it'll be OK on the mid range or hi speed circuit. Remember, the piston skirts get oil with the gas. If they arent getting gas, they're not getting oil. Expensive things happen then.Clean the carbs before you run it again.
