my 25 hp evinrude wont start, we cleaned the carborator, the reeds were fine, and we filled the carborator manually before putting it back on, the boat ran for about a minute before killing, we replaced the fuel pump thinking it was not getting gas and the motor still does not work.....i need suggestions on what might be wrong

Compression good on both cylinders?Have you performed a spark test to insure both leads will jump a 1/2" gap with a crisp blue spark? If you pull the plugs after engine stalls are the plugs wet with fuel mix?

Does the primer bulp get hard when you sqeeze it an does it stay hard?<br /><br />is the vent of your fuel tank clogged?<br /><br />is your float set correctly?

Also, an air leak in the fuel line quick connect, etc will do that. Try pumping the bulb and see if you can keep the engine running. Proof positive is to put a peice of transparent fuel line temporarily between the fuel pump and carburetor.

we have done everything with the spark plugs and all that and the engine wants to start..the engine will start if it has a gas supply, but it doesnt seem as if any gas is gettin to the carburetor....and how do you know if your float is set correctly

Re: boat wont start

you can flip over the carb and the float should be pretty much parallel to maybe just a tad higher. float drop is probably in neighborhood of 1-1.5"<br /><br />if you have air leak in fuel lines you'll have problems getting fuel to the carbs, and the primer bulb on the fuel line will just stay squishy if it's big enough leak. also not to sound like asking stupid question, but is the hose connected in right direction? there's an arrow on the bulb.

Salzer....could you post the year or model number of your engine please?<br /><br />EDIT: (hit the reply button too soon.... :) )<br /><br />ob asked if you checked the spark (should jump a 1/2" gap) and you posted you check the plugs and all that, but did you insure the spark would jump a 1/2" gap. If you just grounded the plug and watched for the spark, that's not really telling you anything.<br /><br />Here is another something to try, take some premix in a spray bottle and if the engine fires, shoot the spray into the throat of the carb. If the engine keeps running as long as you shoot the fuel into the throat, fuel supply problem for sure. If the engine still quits, you probably will need to look at the ignition system.<br /><br />Reason I asked for the year is so we can determine if its a CD ignition system or conventional system....points and condensers.<br /><br />Thanks
