1975 9.9 crankshaft seal leaking-top

In reference to a ealier post of my 9.9 missing at low idle I took it to a mechanic and asked them to check it out and that it was missing at idle.They said that they tried to adjust it out but couldnt and sold me some soy to run in the tank and if that didnt work we could rebuld the carb.Well it didnt work so I took it back and for a carb job and now I get a call from my marine dealer and after taking the carb. apart (not rebuilding)he tells me the top crankshaft seal is leaking and that is what is causing the low idle miss.Im now $200.00 in the hole and still have a problem. Im at my wits end with this guy and now he tells me its not worth getting it fixed because he would have 5 more hrs in it.Im beginning to feel angry that they couldnt have found this out first.What should I do? I know its not there fault that the seal is leaking but for crying out loud they are suppose to be the professionals.Why did they not just check it first if it was as simple as pulling the fly wheel as he claimed.I need some advice here.Thanks

Well barnabus if you don't mind getting your hands a bit dirty there is hope. You may be right in not trusting this mechanic so do it yourself. <br /><br />There is an excellent and extensive write up on these engines here on iboats. Go to the red search at the top of the page and use "9.9" for a search arguement. It is quite comprehensive. You could also get a shop manual - search ebay - I got one for my 75 9.9 there.<br /><br />It goes without saying that you need to get the engine back. I would then rebuild the carb - - not that difficult and adjust per the manual. Next would be to do a comptession check.<br /><br />Post back here as you go and keep it to one thread so we can follow and offer help where you need it.

I don't know where on earth they came up with the time to change that crankshaft seal. With the proper seal puller, and driver, that job take's about 5 minutes. Any mechanic should have these tool's because it is such a common repair. We used to do this as a matter of course with any mag. tune-up because it was so fast, and easy.

"....5 more hours in it.....???? Doing what??? The seal??? Oh brudder !!!<br /><br />RUN don't walk! Get your motor back and fix it yourself. As R.Johnson says, it really is a simple fix.

They are either trying to rip you off or they think that they have to split the block in order to replace the seal.This shade tree mechanic just split the block on a 1975 9.9 (same thing as your 15)and including cleaning and replacing all seals and gaskets,it only cost $50 and 3 hours of work.Professionals should be able to do it in under 2.

Because it is a 30 year old motor, the mechanics are probably figuring that the upper main bearing is also well worn and would damage a new seal in a short time with the crankshaft whipping around.<br /><br />Yes, replacing the seal only may work for a short time and it is normally an "in-out" job with the correct special tool. <br /><br />Since the motor is old and not worth a lot of money, most folks just put up with small problems. That motor also may have severe wear on the cylinder block and mag plate bushing also which will not contribute to good idling.
