60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
I just purchased a 1987 60hp Evinrude and it was sitting for a few years. Brought it to a marine mechanic to tune it up and brought out on the water today for the first time. It seems to run great at high speeds but stalls when it runs at low rpm or when shifting into gear from neutral. I had mixed the gas just by eye didnÂ’t really measure exact quantity could the fuel be to rich.
Re: 60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
without asking any diagnostic questions as to why this is happening, why not just simply increase idle speed adjustment screw? And....your engine's longevity depends on correct gas/oil mix.
Re: 60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
Hi
I'm having the same problem with my 1987 3cylinder 60hp evinrude.
Let me know what if anything you found to correcting this issue. I allready rebuilt all carbs thinking this would solve it(it helped) since now goes on reverse and forward but when I kick it to go and take off, it still starves for gas and I need to give it gas with solenoid or it will shut off. After taking off it will run just fine. This is driving me nuts.
Re: 60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
I have a '92 70hp evinrude that had the same problem, stalled putting in gear! WOT ran great. A friend of mine adjusted the carbs and then adjusted the linkage(link and sinq). No problems after that. Adjusting the idle rpm has to be done under a load, prop has to be in the water in gear. It cannot be done properly with the ears and the hose in the driveway.
Also my understanding is that idle adjustment is done with engine timing- in other words, a timing light. Well good luck and I hope this helps, it helped me.

Re: 60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
I had exactly the same problem on my '82 Evinrude 60 2-cyl, and it turned out to be loss of compression on one cylinder - I'd recommend doing a compression test.
Re: 60hp 1987 evinrude stalls at low rpm & when shifting in gear
Same problem on my '83 Evinrude 50. I did all the things I could find to be recommended in this list (Seafoam treatment, link and sync, clean carbs, check and clean out orifices, fuel lines, etc) and it smoothed out the engine running but did not improve the original problem. Just the other day I found that one vacuum hose running to the mid-speed orifice of one carb had a crack in it just past where it fit on the carb fitting. I cut that off and remounted the tube. Voila, new engine. Runs perfectly and I can floor the throttle from its lowest in gear speed to WOT without it dying (used to have to keep punching the choke and inching up the throttle until it caught at the higher rpm). So, add to the list to check any vacuum lines to all the carbs. Mine run from the back of the air intake housing to some splitters and then to the various carb fittings.
Good luck!
