Help needed! I have a 89 model 3 cylinder 60hp johnson with starting problems. Starts fine first up on a trip. Runs smooth. Then after a few stops & starts (at fishing spots), refuses to start. Sometimes will fire again like it is flooded. First time it happened no spark. Phoned the mechanic, he turned up & it started! Said it was interminent power pack problem. Replaced that. Has ran fine for a number of trips, and has started to stop again, but does have spark (maybe weak). Can it be the stator? Can fuel problems do that? Not the kill switch.

Welcome!

Lets start with the basics. We assume the carbs are clean and the motor hasn't been sitting.

What grade fuel are you using? Is it fresh? (Over 30 days old is not fresh) What oil? Ratio?

The biggie -- what spark plugs?

Carbs are clean. Fuel is fresh before each trip and regular unleaded pump (Australia 91 octane?) Oil is Valvoline 2 stroke, and engine is VRO (self mixing). I will get back to you on the plugs, but apprently the right ones put in by last mechanic.
