these can serve two purposes: the first being to stabelize the transom more while driving, and the second purpose is that it can be bend down to a 90 degree angle to cause more drag, and more drag equalls slower speeds on the boat

hope this helps

This is the theory, whether in air or water.

http://cavity.ce.utexas.edu/~kinnas/uti99/node2.html

Mine (on a 50hp) really only assisted in keeping the steering straighter while moving slowly
(under 5 knots), however, there are some good raps from some members on iboats. Perhaps it's horsepower related.

Honda21 is talking about a trolling plate (happy troller), what you are inquiring about is a Hydrofoil planning device. Do a search on hydrofoils on this site. There is plenty to read.

Like Unicorn says, those fins are intended to provide lift to help the boat get on plane and stay on plane easier at less throttle. They're more effective at higher speeds when they provide more lift, as shown in Unicorn's diagram, but keeping in mind their small area versus the overall weight of the motor and stern of the boat, they may make no noticeable difference if used on a 20' boat packing a 500# four-stroke, for example. Unicorn - do you have any numbers as to the amount of lift, e.g. xx pounds of lift per sq. inch of foil at yy knots?
