Bad gas or not?

I just got a 19?? Evinrude Sportwin from a friend. I have no idea what model (It is spray painted because it is used on duckboat). I think it is a 9.9. It has not been used in as while because of a broken pull cord, but it used to run fine. I fixed the pull cord and had it running briefly, but after about 30 seconds it shut off and wont re start (then I had to row back to the launch and missed hunting). I also put in brand new plugs. I dont know if it is running on a lean mix or not because the little nob has no writing With starter fluid in the carborator it will run, until that is gone. My other 9.9 did the exact same thing (had to row and miss hunting again), on the same tank of gas. Do you think that is my problem? What do I do to get the old gas out of the line and motor? What else should I check for? I need this baby for late goose season!

I am frustrated. I dont think it should be anything too major.

Thanks,
C-Villy

Re: Bad gas or not?

There will be a plate on the port (left) transom bracket that has the Model & Serial number on it. There may also be a core plug (looks like a small freeze out plug) on the powerhead (block) that has those same numbers. We need the "Model NUmber" to determine exactly what engine you have.

Do not use starting fluid as that has no lubricating qualities. If you need to spray anything into the engine use a spray container of fuel that has the same fuel mixture that the engine requires.

Your erxplanation of the problem indicates that the carburetor is fouled and will require removing, cleaning, and rebuilding with a complete carburetor kit. The kit will no doubt be available at NAPA or at your local dealership.

That knob you speak of.....

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: Bad gas or not?

Thanks for the help. The carborator, is it pretty easy to take apart. I have done it on a briggs motor so I think I should be able to do it. What is included in the kit?

Do you think that needle being screwed up might have something to do with the motor not starting?

New float, new mixture control packing, new gaskets, new needle & seat, new boss gasket, new soft metal plug so you can pull the old one and clean behind it. Pretty well everything you need. Some of the aftermarket kits (18- part numbers) do not include the float for older outboards.
"Sportwin" has been used Forever by Evinrude. Could be a '41 3.3hp, a '65 9.5hp, or a '70s 9.9hp. You're going to need a model number to get the right carb kit and the right service manual so you can rebuild the carb. (If you don't want to buy a service manual, you can often borrow one from the local library. Even though the carb is easy to rebuild, use a manual.)

Check the engine block for a shiny convex disc about the size of a quarter with some numbers stamped into it. Even if it's just the serial number we may be able to work out a model number for you. Normally the number was on a metal tag attached to one of the transom clamps, but sometimes they fall off.

Good luck!

Re: Bad gas or not?

Before I start to rip everything apart, do you think it might just be the bad gas? If so, what do I do to get the bad stuff out of the engine and the hose and start running the new stuff in?
