I purchased a used l981 Johnson 70 horse outboard on a pontoon boat. The threads on the tilt cylinder were damaged and someone had installed 4 set screws which did nothing more than leak hydraulic fluid into the lake. I used JB weld to seal the threads but I need to find a source for a new tilt cylinder. It is the same as on page9-19 of the Seloc Johnson/Evinrude repair manual Volume 1V. The engine is most likely a V4-thanks

Are you speaking of the type PTT assy which sits between the transom brackets, the one that has two trim plungers and one large tilt cylinder in the center whose tilt rod attaches to a pin in the upper center portion of the swivel bracket?

Yes, thats it I found a used replacement for 125 bucks, but I think I have fixed it by using JB weld on the threads for now and built a couple of brackets to hold the end cap from moving. I would still like to know how the threads could have become stripped-----

Unless the threads are completely gone, someone crossthreaded them.Other idea is poor manufacturing but that doesn't fit a motor that old.

DHP

Go to ebay and type in "tilt trim".Check it a few days.Your cylinder will appear sooner or later.
Right now the prices on ebay are way down because there are far fewer people looking for boating products and the number is even farther down because money is aimed toward christmas presents and not used things from ebay.
