79 Johnson 35hp shifting problem

I have a 1979 Johnson outboard 35hp and i am haveing shifting problems.I can shift it manualy but not with shifter,it will shift into forward and neutral at remote but not reverse there is a little play at engine,the cables have a fixed end at engine,not adjustable.Have any ideas?

hello<br /> what control box do you have? what type cables are you running? the factory cables all had adjustments on the engine cable end.

rodbolt's right on the money, the cables should be adjustable both at the engine side and the remote end by way of a trunion nut.

the shifter cable should have snap catch or springloaded bolt type connector which you push in and turn 1/4 turn to release. connector should be on a threaded rod connected to the cable/ on this rod is a adjustment nut to move the cable forward or back. same for throttle

First adjust the shift handle as per instructions in the manual. There is no adjustment at the control box end of the cable.
