What, if any, difference is there between a 1960 40hp model# RDS22 Johnson and a 1961 40hp model# 35525 Evinrude.

I'm looking at getting the Evinrude as a parts motor for transome and engine parts. Does anyone know what parts will work and what parts won't?

Thanks.

I think there is a change on the connecting rod bearings '60-'61. Ain't much as Laddies indicated.

Paul that little change was quite significant. The 1960 engine still had the earlier 35 horse rods while the 1961 was already outfitted with the heavier 40 horse innards. The outside parts except for the cowling are the same

Most of the 1960s we sold self distructed in the first month or two and I thought the replacement powerheads were the update powerheads, I think by the end of summer of 60 we had change all of the originals

Laddies, very interesting - I hadn't heard that! Were, generally, the rods at fault?

Most were broken cranks at the flywheel some were rods, overall we hated the things. We had a customer that traded engines every year and we change his Super 35 over on a 15" Thompson boat when he picked up his boat and drove it back to his cottage it was 2 MPH slower than the trip to the marina. We tried ever thing that we could think of to get it right, many calls to the factory and finally but the 35 back on, he got his 2 MPH back and we got the 40 back, that was his last Johnson outboard. It wasn't one of our better summers--Bob

Must have had the wrong prop. My dad had a 1957 35hp and a 1963 40hp electramatic, the 40 was faster. Alot of early 40hp motors around here snapped the flywheels off the crankshafts.

jimmbo, they had the problems fixed by 63 in fact the replacement powerheads ran well it was only the 1960s that were bad, we used to joke about them and called the the Aqua Velva engines, because Aqua Velva adds were for the Aqua Velva Secret and the powerheads that failed were baby blue in color and OMC surely did keep it a secret ;) ;) Bob
