My recently replaced trim and tilt is corroding again in the same spot. On the side of the piston the MFGer used a stainless insert to seal a hole. The aluminum around the insert is corroding. This is the second time. I replaced it last yr 8/04.

What’s happening?
How do I stop this?

Note:
My zincs are perfect no electrolysis at all.
No other corrosion anywhere on the engine.
Corrosion is above the water line.

Re: Corrosion trim & tilt

The zincs really should not be perfect. I'd pull them and make sure the mounting bolts are making good contact. A lot of corrosion is not visible until you start pulling cylinder heads and such and find the bolts locked.

Let's start again...what engine do you have..yr and model???
The piston is INSIDE the cylinder with an oring for a seal...are you refering to the cylinder body?? perhaps where the line-clamp holds the SS line at the top of the cylinder??

Re: Corrosion trim & tilt

Let me be a little clearer:

I have a Johnson Oceanrunner 175 HP 1996

The trim and tilt piston housing corroded and I replaced it 8/2004. I just noticed the same spot is corroding again. It’s where the MFG used a Stainless insert to plug a hole in the side of the trim and tilt housing/block. I checked the ground to the Zinc and it’s good for the entire motor and tilt, even where the corrosions takes place
