1995 Johnson no spark

Just put a '95 Johnson 50 hp back together for piston/block issues and find no spark upon cranking. My experience has been with '80's motors without the relays on the ECU bracket. I have not yet tried for spark with the red harness connector unplugged but have checked with ohmmeter for correct operation of ignition switch/kill switch at the connector junction. I would like to know what the function of the relays located on the ECU bracket are. Just wondering if they are somehow tied to a low oil sensor etc. Word was that someone had disconnected the buzzer at the throttle/gearshift control and this had been reconnected just prior to me pulling the powerhead. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Hey John....great too see you here on the iboats site....my dad spends alot of time here helping people out mostly with mercury and mercruiser stuff....he looked thru his books and doesnt have any info on the ecu engines....Im a fan of the #67 rig and Ive always thought you were one of the best top o drivers ive ever seen!! Hi Nick,sorry I missed Top O' this year. Heard it was great water! Well maybe I heard it was downright rough...but that's what some of the best stories are made of. Hope to be back soon too. <br />Anyway, back to the motor, tried disconnecting the red harness with no luck in regaining spark. Checked for voltage at the purple wire on the terminal strip but can't follow which one it is when it gets to the CD unit. The purple wire at the terminal strip gets 10 volts when cranking but as I said, I can't see which wire is purple on the rubber connector near the CD unit. The one I think is purple gets high voltage when cranking as does the kill wire. The kill wire gets no voltage when switching the key from off to run (not crank position). When cranking, the primary lead to the coil gets a very weak voltage. I am going to try to borrow another CD unit to see what happens. If anyone out there has any suggestions, please feel free to join in.

John...I talked with wayne at rydes about your motor and he said nine out of ten times it is the power pack that goes bad one those engines....here is the info and specs so you can trouble shoot it yourself...good luck...Bob.

Well here's the good news and the bad.<br /><br />Good- motor is running!<br />Bad - no idea why it started getting spark. <br /><br />Bob, if you can send the troubleshooting info it will help if the problem returns. Thanks for the help! johnbroge@talkamerica.net
