i have 1983 35hp johnson the starter will not pop up in fly wheel but starter runs :confused:

many times when the starter motor spins and the bendix fails to engage the flywheel, it is because the battery is not "hot" enough.

If your battery is fully charged as BB suggests try spraying a little WD-40 on the shaft. If this works then lightly spray some very fine machine oil on it to keep it lubed.

Grease or regular oil will collect dirt resulting in a binding action that prevents the bendix gear from sprialing upwards.<br /><br />The light machine oil mentioned above is as heavy a oil that one should use. Also, if grease and dirt exists, the WD-40 mentioned will clean that away quickly.
