Re: Tune Up on a 9.5 Johnson Sea Horse
Sorry if my earlier reply to your question about the carb sounded flippant. I was trying to be both humerous and helpful at the same time, and truely was interested in where the hole was that was shooting gas. Sometimes parts are missing or leadshot pops out. My humor sometimes comes across as abrasive instead of funny. Glad to hear you have the problem in hand.
You have a 1964 Regular-shaft (not long shaft) Johnson 9.5 motor.
Your two indespensible resources are a decent manual and this forum. The Seloc manual at the bottom left of this page will do you fine - good reading. It can get confusing because it covers many different models, but it also does a great job of covering outboard basics. Read the stuff that pertains to your motor, skim the rest. You don't have to memorize it, just remember that you read about it and whereabouts it was. Then when you need to look up something specific the Seloc manual is not so confusing. The OEM manual is the best there is, but it assumes you're a bit more familiar with outboards and often asks you to use special tools. Also, the 1964 Johnson service guide also covers multiple models. They didn't get model-specific until about 1968. I use both manuals.
This forum is populated with the best outboard gurus in the world (not me) and they will help you through anything you don't understand. Also, at the top of this page about 1/3 of the way down in the center is a red "search" button. Learn to use that. Search under stuff like "9.5 carburator" and you'll find old posts with fantastic information in them. Priceless. Read up on stuff while waiting for your manual(s) to arrive. Here's some more good reading:
http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
IBoats has most of the regular maintenance parts you'll need (impeller, carb kit, etc.) at good price and fast shipping.

Anyway, a belated "Welcome to iBoats!". So, where was the hole that was shooting gas, anyway?

Oh, and you want just plain old outboard lower unit oil. They sell it at hardware stores, Walmart, all over. Try out the "search" button for tips on changing the lower unit oil. "Lower unit oil" ought to be good search words to use.
