water in lower unit 69 6hp fisherman

I've been searching for 30 minutes for any previous postings......please forgive me if it's already been answered.<br /><br />69' 6hp Evenrude Fisherman....left me stranded a few months ago...<br />- idles wonderfully no power when in forward or reverse<br />- water in the lower unit....<br />- replaced lube in lower unit<br />- water in lower unit again<br />- took to dealer (recommended carb kit)<br />- same old, same old<br />- called dealer (recommended cleaning carb again)<br />- same old, same old water in lower unit<br />- trying to drop lower unit (figured it out through previous posts.........<br />The real question is do I need a water pump or what? Thank you.

If you don't know when the last water pump was put in I would put in a new water pump and T-stat.<br /><br />Question-- when you changed the lower unit oil did you change the little seals that go under the fill and drain screws. If not try that and then run it again and see if it stoped it if not then reseal the unit under the pump and the prop seal.<br /><br />When you say no power , is it trying to reve up in gear or is it just dying. First take a compression check and get back to us with the numbers.<br />What type of plug are you running.<br />Those little old engines were tough little motors. I run one myself and it runs great but I had issues with it first before I fixed it.
