I have been using a '46-'50 HD 25 Johnson 2.5 hp that was my grandfather's. I recently had it serviced, which included a throrough cleaning, impeller check, etc. The mechanic advised me that it needed carb gaskets, as it leaks around the carb. area. Sometimes it leaks rather badly. I have viewed some posts about float issues. Any ideas?

Beautiful motor, repaired by my father (handle break) before I was even born. It has seen 5 states and 2 Canadian provinces. Help!!

Welcome to the forum Mathew,

First off, how is it running now? Gaskets would be good to replace if they're leaking, leaky gaskets lead to air leaks which will cause preformance issues. Floats may be difficult to find for that motor.

Mike :)

Not knowing how one should really run, or sound, for comparison, it seems maybe a bit rough. It will climb through the throttle. I certainly wouldn't mind getting the literature together if I can get some parts.

Thanks for the reply!
Matthew

Matthew,

You can probably find a service manual at one of these places.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/index.html
http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.main

Here's some places you can check for parts

http://www.featherweightoutboards.com/customer/home.php
http://outboardparts.com/pindex.html
http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcelectricindex.html

Ebay is also an option.

Hope this helps,
Mike ;)

That's a pretty simple carb. Most leakage is caused by a bad cork float. New plastic ones are available - use one from Mercury, 1395-8983, or NAPA, #18-7208. Bore out the center of the new float to fit the needle shaft of your carb and it should work fine.
- Scott
