25hp Johnson cable attachment

I have bought a boat with a Johnson Mod-25RL73A Ser-E3790982 It had the tiller handle with the throttle twist grip. I want to hook up the remote shift and throttle cables. The throttle cable has resticted movement with the tiller handle attached. Is there some way to eleminate the friction of the handle or do I have to take it off? If so, how much and what has to be removed?

Looks like I have found the problem, the shaft that the tiller handle is geared to has two holes for grease that needed attention. The shaft was hanging up in the corroded bushings.<br />This little Johnson kicks our Starcraft right down the river. Thanks for the help.
