I have a 1957 3 hp Johnson Seahorse OB motor that I bought recently. It hasn't been run for quite a few years. I changed plugs, saw no varnish in the carb. bowl, and made sure the float worked well. It starts very easily. My problem is that when I give it full throttle, it seems like it is running on one cylinder for a while and then it sputters a couple of times, and then kicks into full speed or it seems that the other cylinder engages and it runs great. It doesn't drop back to the slower speed while at full throttle. When I turn down the throttle, it sometimes reverts back to the one cylinder syndrome when I go to high throttle again. Any idea how to cure this problem?
<br /><br />Sounds like you might be dropping a cylinder at higher rpm's. This is not uncommon for older motors with bad coils. A bad coil can short to ground or a winding go open when they get hot. A service manual is a must at this point. Parts shouldn't be a problem.
