Excessive fuel consumption 1989 88 SPL

I'm finding this motor, 1989 Evinrude 88 spl, to be a fine runner but awful thirsty. My old 1978 85 was pretty easy on gas, but this one seems to go through a lot more. I'm figuring like 9 gph at 4000 rpm. I'm pushing a 1300 pound lapstrake hull, using a 17" SST prop with WOT of 5400 lightly loaded. Any ideas?

Grin & bear it. Your set-up is a tad under but not enough to do anything with in my book. I would expect around 9 gph at WOT though.
