Default evinrude selectric no reverse

I bought a selectric control for my 65 40 johnson electramatic. I got forward in reverse and correct neutral but cant get reverse? Can someone tell me how to check the wiring? I hooked the blu to the blu, the purple to purple and green to green. I also floated in the river and tried every other combination. Thanx for the help.

Most of the original wires were shot long ago. So you need to figure out what wires are crossed blue or green. The wires come out of the bundle of wires going into the engine, looking at the front of the engine, they (3)go down a hole into the exhaust housing on the left side. Purple is usually hot, check with a volt meter to see if you have 0 volts in neutral, should have 12v volts when shifted into forward, 0 neutral, 12v reverse. Where the wires have/had knife disconnects where they come out of the exhaust hsg. swap the blue/green wires. Should change toforward is forward. Question is does it have 12v going to the other wire? If so, broken wire or bad coil, or broken spring. Special oil needs to be in the lower unit, OMC/BRP PREMIUM BLEND. Problems down there will be expensive. Buy a factory service manual and get to know the o/b junk yards. Good Luck.Backfire
